How to Steer Your Life

Are you stuck in your head?  Or do you make decisions from your gut feelings?

I have news for all you overly analytical people (yes, I am talking to myself again!)… making decisions from your head is a horrible way to steer your life!

Many of us have been raised to “be logical” and think things through.  We have been taught to disregard our feelings in favor of making pros and cons lists.  Although your brain has many different valuable functions, steering your life is not one of them.

Your emotions are your inner guidance system, intended to direct your life in the biggest, best direction.  Now, I am not talking about your fleeting feelings of anger, sadness, or even joy.  I am referring to that small feeling in your gut that gives you a red light or a green light.

I’m sure you’ve had an experience where you had a nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach not to do something, but you went ahead and did it anyway.  I’m also sure the results weren’t very pleasant.

Now think of a time when the reverse was also true… where you had a feeling you should do something but you ignored it.  Chances are regret probably followed.

Think about whatever you are trying to make a decision on.  What does it feel like in your stomach?  Does it feel like a happy tickle or a stomach ache?  If you always reach for the experience that feels best in your gut, your life will start flowing in wondrous ways!

Just for a Day…

Let’s do something different… or maybe it’s something you always do.  Either way, let’s try it – just for a day.

Just for today, let’s try to stop judging.  Yes, I am talking to myself here too!  When we think of judging, we normally think of judging people.  While it’s true that that is one part of it, I am also asking you to stop judging situations –just for a day.

I invite you to stop the black and white thinking.  People and situations are never good or bad until you put your ownBlue Butterfly perceptions and judgments on them.  Today, make an agreement to see everything as “just the way it is”.

Once you release your judgment, two things should begin to happen.  First of all, your complaining should begin to subside.  After all, if nothing is “wrong” then there is nothing to complain about, right?

Secondly, you should begin to feel more peaceful.  As you let go of constantly assessing things and just allow them to be, a clam sense of serenity will begin to wash over you.  Hanging on tightly to results and searching for a false sense of control is no longer an option.

Sure, this might be a challenge at first.  It’s probably very different from the way you are used to viewing things.  But let’s give it a try together… just for a day.

A Word about God

I wanted to talk a minute about God…. I feel compelled to talk about how God appears in my life and my blog.

Now we are all grown-ups here and I am intending that I attract readers who have open minds.  Still, I know many people have been raised associating the word God with dogma and hypocrisy.

To be true to my authentic self, there will be times when I mention God in my blog posts.  I might refer to God as a male, female, or “it”.  I might capitalize references or use lower case letters.  None of that really matters.

I don’t pretend to fully know what God is or understand the complexity (or maybe simplicity) of him.  My concept of Her keep changing and I am okay with that.  What I DO know is that there is something out there that is guiding us… some all good, all knowing presence that wants us to grow and develop.  Wait… maybe I should rephrase that!  I know there is something “in here” that wants the best for all of us.  I know that God is both inside and outside of us… an all pervading wave of unconditional love.

So if the word God is a loaded word for you, please feel free to change it to whatever feels best to you and your beliefs.  You might use Spirit, the Divine, Energy, Nature, the Universe, Love, or a myriad of other words.  The only thing I ask is… please don’t let the words I use get in the way of the message!

Namaste!
